Sigma Kappa has always placed great emphasis on
academic excellence and takes every opportunity to encourage its members to do
the same.
All members of Sigma Kappa across the nation
strive for high standards of excellence in all
aspects of our lives with one of the most
crucial areas being the development and support
of high standards in scholarship. As a chapter,
Delta Theta accepts the challenge of being
dedicated to our values of scholarship. Sigma
Kappa recognizes why members choose Truman State
University in the first place--to achieve high
standards in academics. We as Sigma Kappa, do
what we can to encourage our members to meet
these standards to the best of their ability and
provide all possible resources to help them
achieve this goal of academic excellence.
Sigma Kappa’s national policy states that all
members must maintain a grade point average of
at least 2.25 to be in “good academic
standing.” However, Delta Theta’s Code of
Conduct stipulates that all members maintain a
2.5 grade point average to further stress the
importance of scholarship within our chapter
Sigma Kappa believes in the recognition of its
members to promote and encourage further
academic success. This recognition comes in
many different forms including recognition at
both chapter meetings and at banquets that are
held by our chapter. At our annual Mother’s
Weekend Banquet in the spring and our Father’s
Weekend Banquet in the fall members are
recognized for their academic achievements
during the previous semester. These honors
include the most improved grade point average,
the highest Big Sis/Little Sis grade point
average, members who have made Truman’s Vice
President’ List (3.5-3.99) and members who have
made the President’s List (4.0). Announcements
are also made at meetings and banquets to
recognize members on acceptance into academic
honor societies, post-undergraduate schools, and
any other high academic achievement.
At every formal chapter meeting, Sigma Kappa
takes time to recognize the weekly academically
achievement of its members. During meeting,
members put their name in an “A’s of the Week
Jar” if they got an A during the past week. If a
member did not skip class during the past week,
they may also put their name in the “Skippy
Jar.” The Vice President of Scholarship pulls
out a name from each jar at the end of meeting
and the members are rewarded with a small gift
(soap, candle, lotion, candy, etc.). All “A’s
of the Week” are then saved until the end of the
semester and one name is drawn out to receive a
gift card to a local business. In addition to
the jars, a member will be recognized for
completing the most study hours beyond what was
required during the past week. If recognized she
receives the “Smarty Pants” award. The
scholarship committee also performs random
“library raids” and hands out treats to the
Sigma Kappas who are studying at the library.
Sigma Kappa and its
Vice President of Scholarship are always
actively seeking new and improved methods to
further develop our academic program and make it
an effective tool for all members. If you have
any further questions or comments about our
scholarship program, please contact our VP of
Scholarship, Rebecca Fouts.
